The Watch Lake – North Green Lake VFD had a callout shortly after noon for another bush fire. This makes the 7th call in two weeks for our department!
We were first sent to the site of the Round Lake fire that started a few days ago only to find the wildfire crews were still there mopping it up. They had no idea there was another fire nearby. Then a girl on horse back told us it was at the Wilkinson meadows and so we headed there through the Flying U. It was a lightning strike-caused fire that the Flying U ranch hands had already started fighting. We joined in and brought the BC Wildfire Service Wildfire Officer in with us. We were only there for 30 minutes when we were able to turn it over to BC Wildfire as the crew from the Round Lake fire was moved to this one.
BC Wildfire had helicopters actioning the first fire and a large snorkel Sikorsky was in front of the Fire Chief’s house actioning yet another fire. This one was located across the railway tracks from the Round Lake fire. Our firefighters were not needed for that one, fortunately. And another fire started yesterday northeast of the Round Lake fire. This one is now classified as being held and the other 3 are under control.
FYI the Air Quality Monitor at Fire Hall #2 is currently at 2 this morning (at 5:30 a.m.), down from Saturday’s 600. The fresh air is a welcome reprieve and is allowing us to open windows again!
