How to Handle Chimney Fires

 1.      Get everyone out of the building.

2.      Call 911.

If safe to do so, you can try to put the fire out yourself while waiting for the fire crew to arrive.

You will need:

a small container of water, fire tongs, and a fire extinguisher if you have one.

3.       Open the door of the wood stove as wide as possible.

 4.      Throw a small container of water onto the burning wood.  The steam will smother the fire.

 5.      Use the tongs to remove the firewood and throw it outside into the snow.

 6.      If you have a fire extinguisher, spray it into the wood stove.

 7.      Close the door of the stove.

 8.      Get out of the building.

When fire crews arrive, they can use a thermal imaging camera to see if there are any hot spots in the wall and ensure the fire is completely out.
